CENTRAL TEXAS STAMPEDE HOCKEY

The Central Texas Stampede played in Belton, Texas from 1996-2001 and introduced many of us in the Bell County area to the game of hockey.

90s HOCKEY IN BELTON

Anyone who had the privilege of experiencing hockey in the 90s at the Bell County Expo Center, now called the Cadence Bank Center, will never forget the smell of roasted peanuts cooking, the sound of cow bells ringing, and watching Wild Thing rile up the crowd. The Stampede were not around for too long, but it was a heck of a ride. The fans may not have understood everything that was happening, but boy did we enjoy the show!

THE LEAGUE

The Stampede played in the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL). Notable rivals in the league included: the Waco Wizards, Austin Ice Bats, New Mexico Scorpions, El Paso Buzzards, and Odessa Jackalopes. The hockey teams had some iconic 90s sports logos including: a bat flying with a hockey stick in front of the moon (Austin Ice Bats), a superhero/villain wielding a hockey stick to save/dominate the world (Waco Wizards), and an angry bull crushing a hockey stick between its jaws (Central Texas Stampede).
